If you've moved to the Gold Coast from somewhere with a milder climate, your old pool routine probably isn't going to cut it here. Between the humidity, the pollen from jacarandas and poincianas, the summer storms, and how much more we actually use our pools, the "clean it every couple of weeks" advice you read online usually doesn't hold up.
Warm water plus high humidity is basically a algae incubator. Add in nearby trees dropping leaves and pollen, storm run-off, and pools that get used almost year-round, and you've got a recipe for chemistry that drifts fast. A pool that only needs light attention in Melbourne can turn cloudy within days here if it's neglected.
A proper clean isn't just skimming leaves off the top. Each visit should cover water testing and chemical balancing, brushing walls and tiles (this is the one most people skip, and it's how algae gets a foothold), vacuuming, and a quick check of the pump basket and filter pressure.
If you're finding your pool looking hazy by the weekend or you're forever chasing algae on the steps, you're probably under-servicing it for our climate. A consistent weekly visit almost always works out cheaper than letting it slide and needing a green pool recovery down the track.
